So sometime around the start of fall, I switched from MTS to Shaw. Saved a lot of money. Lost a lot of channels. Among them: CNN and almost anything associated with educational content. Besides, I’ve been distracted. And my distractions have taken me on a looping course away from the news cycle of the moment. On Twitter, I won a subscription to The New Yorker, the apple of my reading eye. I don’t think I’ve yet read a single issue straight through. I used to hit up U.S. political blogs several times a day. Now I haven’t seen the front [...click for more...]
It’s hard to believe, sometimes, how much time goes by between one post and the next. It’s even harder to believe when I know, for a fact, that I have five unfinished drafts of posts that I stayed up late nights battering out on my keyboard. With each, something stopped me from hitting “publish.” Exhaustion with the subjects, maybe. It’s alright; there will be time (for a hundred visions and revisions, before the taking of a toast and tea.) But lo, I come bearing news: on Wednesday, Sept. 7, I will be joining the Winnipeg Internet Pundits on UMFM Radio! What [...click for more...]
Evening greetings, friends! A small blogkeeping note: after hearing some buzz about the system, I swapped my comment system over to Disqus. This is part of a general editorial (HA HA HA) decision that I’d like to make this blog a bit more interactive. Over the last five months I’ve been having a lot of fun writing my little potpurri of blog posts and watching the readership grow. Now I’d like to make the blog a bit more welcoming to discussions; that comes down mostly to playing around with new types of content, of course — my Very Serious 1,000-word ramblings are not the [...click for more...]
For the next ten glorious days, Nothing in Winnipeg will be Everything in Portland, Everything in San Francisco, and everything else in many Amtrak points in-between. I hope to be able to blog a bit from the road, sharing some of my favourite scenes and urban discoveries from my travels. In the event that I do not, I will be back in Winnipeg (and back at work) on March 27, and I’m sure I’ll be bursting with blog entries upon my return. Fare thee well, friends, enjoy these 10 days of a warming Winnipeg, and may all your windshields be [...click for more...]
Executive blogkeeping decision: I need to get my last post off the top of my blog. I tried, folks, I tried. I stayed up ’til 4 a.m. last night, trying to force something out. Then I woke up on the couch at 8 a.m. and tried again. But everything I tried to write was coming up anger. Anger and sheer exhaustion that this is the millionth time we’ve discussed these things, and that they will be discussed a million times more. Everything I tried to write was stung through by the ugliness that buzzes at the edge of every story about [...click for more...]
I am home from the hospital, home and still giggling over the note found taped to a hospital bed above. In my mind, Winnipeg is a place of blunt practicalities, a place with little truck for euphemistic conversation; apparently it shares this with the health care industry. I may have been far too optimistic about my ability to blog much in these, the early days of recovery. Even yesterday, after waking up from surgery bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, with minimal pain, I figured I’d be bounding out of there in no time, reading for a relaxing recovery week at home and cranking up the [...click for more...]
It’s Friday night in Winnipeg and fantastically, I have Friday night social plans! How delightful. Before I go, I want to thank everyone who has linked to Nothing in Winnipeg from their own, more useful blogs. Through this quiet action (and some not-so-quiet actions, thank you Mr. Committee), I feel a lovely warm welcome from the blogosphere. And I’m looking forward to playing some small part. Years ago, when I first got the blog-bug, I spent some time browsing for Winnipeg blogs. But back then, the local blogosphere was hard to breathe in: too thin, content molecules too scattered. So [...click for more...]
I would like to graciously thank all the nice folks who have linked me here, there and everywhere. Now that people are actually reading, and my heart’s all in here, and well I’m full of all kinds of blather, it occurs to me: while my manifesto is, perhaps, a statement of personal goals and a commitment not to wuss out, it’s not exactly a guiding document on content. And I’m curious what folks who are swinging by would enjoy for me to write. So why not start a poll? Everyone loves a radial button! Also, I want to take my newest WordPress plugin for [...click for more...]
